 BANGKOK, April 7 (Reuters) - Thai stocks are expected to
edge down on Tuesday because of domestic political tension
ahead of a big anti-government rally, as well as gloom on
overseas markets due to U.S. financial fears, analysts said.

 Thousands of red-shirted protesters, supporters of exiled
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, plan a big rally on
Wednesday, and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has vowed to
take firm measures to prevent bloody confrontation.

 "Domestic politics remains the key risk factor for our
market, with investors likely to sell due to fears related to
the big rally on April 8," said Kosin Sripaiboon, head of
research at UOB Kay Hian Securities. "We will also track other
Asian markets lower."

 On Monday U.S. bank shares were dragged down after analyst
Mike Mayo of Calyon Securities warned of rising loan losses by

 Support on the main index .SETI is expected at 440 and
437 and resistance at 447 and 450, the analysts added.

 The Thai market was closed on Monday for a public holiday.
On Friday, it climbed 0.8 percent to 446.04, its highest close
since Feb. 16, cheered by improving U.S. data.

LAS VEGAS — The dream of an American sweep at the last Rolex FEI World Cup Finals to be held in the U.S. for years fell short of reality Sunday, as even two perfect rounds over the fences couldn’t enable McLain Ward to take the international indoor show jumping title.

Ward, the Olympic double gold medalist from New York, was not quite as fast as Germany’s Meredith Michaels Beerbaum in the first leg of the competition at the Thomas & Mack Center on Thursday night, and that proved to be the difference that gave her a third World Cup title.

Like Ward, who rode Sapphire, Beerbaum and her 16-year-old equine partner, Shutterfly, were penalty-free in the two-round power jumping finale before a vocal crowd of 7,497. Beerbaum retained the two-penalty lead over Ward that she carried into the class, but the world’s number-one ranked rider called her triumph “the hardest win I’ve ever had.”

Ward had worked on a plan since last year to be the first American show jumper since 1987 to earn the title. It could have been quite a coup if he emulated the achievement of his countryman, Steffen Peters, who took the Dressage World Cup honors Saturday night.

“I certainly would have liked to have won, but I’m proud of what my team, my horse and myself did,” said Ward. “We did the best we could, and 99 percent of the time, we would have won.”

The only other American to finish in the ribbons was Ward’s 2004 and 2008 Olympic teammate, Beezie Madden, 12th on an up-and-coming mount, Danny Boy. Third place went to the Netherlands’ Albert Zoer on Oki Doki, who stalked the leaders throughout the competition.

Since 2003, the Cup finals had been held every other year in Las Vegas, but because of the economy, the organizer withdrew bids for 2011 and 2013. It was announced after the show, however, that a bid will be put in for 2014.

In the 16th century, Cartagena was a prominent Spanish port and was the principal storage depot for precious treasure plundered by the Spanish from the Indians of Central and South America. Treasure was stored in Cartagena until it could be transported back to Spain. As a result, Cartagena was regularly attacked by hordes of pirates operating throughout the Caribbean. Such prominent buccaneers as Sir Francis Drake and Edward Vernon sacked it repeatedly. To defend against such attacks, the Spaniards built a series of fortresses and walls around the city. The walls required almost two centuries to complete and were finished a mere 25 years before the Spanish were first expelled from the city. Today Cartagena’s old town remains surrounded by the battle-scarred Las Murallas (the walls).

But even in modern times, every year, thousands of visitors still storm the walls of old Cartegena in search of treasure. In this case, its treasure lied in its many cobbled streets, charming cafes, plazas of cascading bouganvilla, and its historical sites. This treasure offers the visitor an experience unparalleled along the Caribbean coastline.

The old city is in two parts the inner walled town featuring most of the colonial buildings and plazas and the outer walled town of Getsemani. Getsemani, originally, was the area where African slaves were housed. Now it features Cartagena’s Convention Center, several historical churches, and the Parque Centenario.

Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas: Just outside the old city, this was reputed to be the largest and strongest fortress ever built by the Spanish. It is a remarkable structure and well worth the visit.

Las Bovedas: This is a complex of 23 dungeons built first to story military munitions but later used as a jail. It was featured in the movie Romancing the Stone (Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner).
