The visuals are nothing short of stunning, especially in HD. It’s worth the download just to check out how beautifully the cg animation is rendered. The action scenes are tight, with Matrix-esque slow motion shots, crazy camera angles and an emphasis on heavy gun play, indicative of producer John Woo’s style. One drawback on the cg animation though is that when characters interact with each other physically it seems awkward. They don’t feel like they are touching. I imagine that when you make something with animation like that you’d run into clipping issues when the characters intereact heavily. In fact, it reminded me of cut scenes from Eternal Sonata, a video game using similar animation techniques but on a bigger scale obviously.

The story is an upgrade from the first movie, although the main antagonist borrows heavily from classic Star Trek villain, the Borg. There’s even a Borg like cube of sorts that serves as it’s foundation. The subplot consists of a triangle between Deunan, Briareos (the main protagonists from the first movie) and Tereus, a biroid created mostly from Briareos’s DNA who becomes Deunan’s new partner after her lover falls in battle.

If I were to make a criticism I’d say that the main antagonist was revealed a tad too late, making the final resolution a little anti-climactic. At a runtime of about an hour and 40 minutes I felt like another 20 minutes would have been justified. When it was over, I couldn’t quite believe it at first. Also, and this may be a good thing, events from the first movie go almost completely without mention. This means that you won’t have to have seen the first one to appreciate this, but at the same time there is a lack of continuity for those that did.

All in all though, it’s a good film and worth a watch.

The first Appleseed film (from 2004) was quite a treat. The cell-shaded CG graphics looked very good for the time. Complementing this obvious standout aspect was an intriguing story and an excellent soundtrack. It’s worth noting that the story, in particular, felt like a genuinely original re-animation of sci-fi concepts.

Fast forward to today and we have the sequel, Ex Machina. It’s pretty simple to separate what works and doesn’t in Machina:

GRAPHICS:

The level of detail in the graphics has improved dramatically, and characters look less like geometric objects with textures painted on and more like genuine people. The cityscapes are even more impressive. Furthermore, the action is more frequent and looks even slicker.

My two gripes with the visuals are these: First, in what is all too common in action movies like this, the best scene is the first one. Hands down. I don’t understand why so many directors feel the need to frontload their movies. I will say that the movie is less guilty of this than its predecessor. Second, movement outside of action scenes still looks a bit jerky. Some might fault mo-cap technology, but for my money, Final Fantasy: Advent Children boasted some mighty believable movement.

STORY/WRITING:

Here’s where Ex Machina falls apart. The story here isn’t anything you haven’t seen executed better in anime/other entertainment. Compared to the plot of the first movie- which created a unique sci-fi framework, this one felt like a filler episode. The villain was cliche, the story far less complex/meaningful than the first, and any intrigue or mystery the story might yet have held was ruined by the horrible writing. The film tasks itself with letting the viewer in on a number of concepts necessary to the plot, but rather than integrate them seamlessly into the dialog, it bashes the viewer over the head with them.

MUSIC:

The soundtrack wasn’t bad- I just didn’t notice it most of the time. This constitutes a slight letdown considering how often I return to the soundtrack from the first movie.

OVERALL: Ex Machina is a sight to behold and warrants a blu-ray purchase. Just don’t expect it to expand much on the ideas introduced in the first Appleseed.

This is a great set for people who want BOTH movies, and don’t have the Anniversary Edition of ROCKY HORROR. The two movies are great, but for completely differing reasons. ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is a cult classic with an established fan base, and SHOCK TREATMENT stands on its own as a curious sequel which heads off in a new direction both musically and thematically.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Rocky Horror Picture Show / Shock Treatment! Click Here

The set here is a special 3 disc edition with two discs devoted to ROCKY HORROR and a single disc for SHOCK TREATMENT. The ROCKY HORROR portion includes the movie, audience participation tracks and video, commentary by Patricia Quinn and O’Brien, segments from a “Where Are They Now?” special on VH-1, and tons of featurettes featuring cast, crew, and fans. It is a rerelease of the 2000-2001 anniversary edition, so if you own that… no need to buy this again (just track down SHOCK TREATMENT on its own).

SHOCK TREATMENT includes a remastered print of the movie (for the first time in widescreen on DVD), a commentary track from the fan club president and his friend (they tell trivia and do some of their “act” for screenings), two features with interviews from cast and crew members about the making of the film and the score, and trailers (which are bizarre and worth a look). Richard O’Brien does not make an appearance in ANY of the extras, so we have to rely on people involved with the production such as director Jim Sharman and Patricia Quinn to fill us in.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show began its ongoing life as a musical play in London in 1973 (The Rocky Horror Show). Creator Richard O’Brien had recently quit the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar, and passed the time between acting jobs by writing a rock musical which truly entertained him. Combining elements of Alice Cooper, Frankenstein, the fifties revival and the sexual revolution, O’Brien and his creative team (including Superstar director Jim Sharman and set designer Brian Thomson, producer Michael White and acting friend Tim Curry) produced a runaway stage hit. The play won awards and ran for seven years in London (it’s currently on tour in England) and was produced all over the world. Lou Adler brought the play to his Roxy Theatre in L.A. in 1974, intending to introduce it to a major studio for a film version. The film was produced in England at Hammer’s Bray Studios and the nearby Oakley Court castle in Berkshire, using most of the British cast and Americans Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf, and was released in London in August 1975. The USA release the following month came after a disappointingly short run of the play on Broadway. Briefly test-marketed in the states, The Rocky Horror Picture Show flopped, and 20th Century-Fox decided to recoup some of its production costs by showing it as a midnight movie in April 1976. Early Rocky fans in New York began performing “audience participation,” ranging from joking in response to the dialogue and singing along to acting out the film in costume in front of the screen. Fox released more prints as the New York and L.A. scenes got media attention, and the film was soon playing in over 250 theaters across the country. After years of midnight showings, the film became one of the top five highest-grossing musicals in U.S. release, and one of the few to earn more than $100 million. The 2006 DVD release includes the original two-disc set released in 2000. The first disc contains the film, with the option of viewing UK or USA versions (the UK version includes the complete “Superheroes” song, while the USA version edits out two verses), commentary by Richard O’Brien and Patricia Quinn, and an optional “audience participation” track. The second disc contains supplementary material, including the 1995 36-minute documentary (made for the laserdisc) featuring interviews with O’Brien, Sharman, Thomson, Adler and most of the film cast; outtakes from the film; 1999 cast interviews from VH1’s “Behind the Music”; trailers and more. Shock Treatment was touted in 1981 as being “not a sequel, not a prequel, but an equal to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” It more closely resembles a musical sequel, using the Brad and Janet characters (played by new actors) in an ironically prescient “reality TV” setting where fast-food magnate Farley Flavors controls Denton USA, a giant TV studio. Brad and Janet appear on the game show “Marriage Maze,” hosted by blind Viennese Bert Schnick (Barry Humphries, creator of Dame Edna). Rocky alumni O’Brien, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell and Charles Gray appear, with many of the Rocky crew behind the scenes, including director Jim Sharman. The songs, hybrids of Rocky Horror meets new wave, are ambitious but somewhat strained. Shock Treatment never took off with most Rocky fans, and can be viewed today as a fun early 80s artifact with its own set of fans. Richard O’Brien’s musical followup is notable for its use of the creative team behind the unique success of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

You should take note of the purported location of the other reviewers on this page. That is significant because their reviews bear little, and most often no, resemblance to the film. One can only wonder if the reviewers are from the exile Cuban community or are their fellow travelers. In my estimation, the relative high ratings that the reviewers gave the film is their attempt to induce you to purchase the film since it mostly trashes Castro and the revolution in Cuba. The only “credit” that film accords to Castro, in rather amorphous and fleeting ways, is:

1. The universal health care system in Cuba.

2. The elimination of illiteracy in Cuba (although one pundit in the film makes the dubious claim that literacy in Cuba is not universal).

3. The low infant mortality rate in Cuba.

4. The rise of Cuban nationalistic pride.

These, of course, are not small accomplishments for a third world country subject to 44 years of an American embargo, invasion by CIA trained forces, frequent acts of sabotage and provocation by violent elements in the exile community, numerous CIA inspired assassination attempts on Castro and other members of the Cuban leadership, frequent diplomatic bullying of other nations by the US State Department to accede to US policies regarding Cuba (esp. 3rd world countries dependant on US aid), an unremitting barrage of US inspired radio propaganda to the Cuban people to resist their government, apparent and unrelenting dissemination of disinformation about Cuba as is, arguably, indicated by the reviews appearing here and so on and so on. As should be expected, the film makes little of these moral crimes against the Cuban people. Nor does the film seem to interview people clearly sympathetic to Castro.

Castro is not interviewed once. The reviewer’s claims about Barbara Walters interviewing Castro, his singing, etc. are bogus. They are not in the film.

The fact that Castro isn’t interviewed is telling: the film does not allow Castro to answer the charges made against him. That way the charges stand unadjudicated, as it were–lurking as potential smears. That is this film’s damning liability.

The film does have good scenes from Cuba and some interesting clips of Castro. Otherwise, I recommend that you find a film that is willing to assume the politically risky possibility that Castro and Cuba just might have a perspective.

No single person can more polarize the American political climate than Fidel Castro does. A small number of anti-Castro Cuban exiles in south Florida still wield political power far beyond their numbers, even though it has been over four decades since any of them set foot on Cuban soil. A trade embargo that was imposed by President Kennedy, largely as a temporary measure, is still in place and the shrillness of the rhetoric has not abated. Despite all the U. S. efforts to topple him, Castro remains the undisputed leader of Cuba, and there is reason to believe that much of this is due to his popularity among the population.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Biography – Fidel Castro: El Comandante! Click Here

This tape takes an even-handed view of this fascinating man. Like so many of the successful revolutionaries down through history, he was born into the privileged classes and showed his rebelliousness at a very early age. One of his confidants testifies that Castro adopted an anti-American stance because he knew that it would tap into the deep resentment that the Cuban people had against their powerful neighbor to the north. Few people realize that Cuba of the fifties was the decadent playground of the American elite. Havana was the sin city paradise, with gambling and prostitution rampant. Castro’s removal of the “sin capitol” feature of Havana was very popular with the Cubans, developing a sense of Cuban national pride.

Some of the impressive successes of Castro’s revolution are also described. The health care system of Cuba is one of the best in the world and he also embarked on a very effective program of universal literacy. While he is a dictator, unlike some of the others around the world, he did not use his political power to amass a fortune in foreign banks. It is also true that he jailed his political opponents and had many executed and the American government has spared few expenses in trumpeting these events.

This shows the fundamentals of power politics at its’ worst. Since Castro was a communist, he is considered by the U. S. government to be an evil enemy. However, when you contrast his actions with those of the military dictators who seized power in countries such as Argentina and Chile, then he is comparatively speaking an improvement. The U. S. turned a blind eye to the mass killings in Argentina and Chile because those leaders were anti-Communist.

Much has been argued about the many tragedies of the death of John Kennedy. Many believe that he would have avoided the extensive American military involvement in Southeast Asia, and there is evidence to support this. I was not aware that only days before his death, Kennedy had sent a message to Castro telling him that he was willing to negotiate an end to the hostilities. This would include a removal of the embargo and a restoration of full diplomatic relations. In fact, the messenger, a French journalist, was in Castro’s office when Castro received the phone call informing him of Kennedy’s death. Yet another sad consequence of Kennedy’s early death.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Biography – Fidel Castro: El Comandante! Click Here

Fidel Castro is a survivor, in many ways he is a person of exceptional political skills. That is a clear message that you get from this tape. It is also clear that Castro wanted to retain political power above all things and much of what he has done was due to political necessity rather than ideological conviction. Like so many other biographical sketches of the dominant people of history, as you watch it, you cannot help but ask many “What if?” questions.

John (Owen Wilson) & Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) are best buds. They’ve known each other for 17 years, work together, and in there spare time crash wedding parties; where they drink like sailors, mingle with unsuspecting relatives, and hit on single and willing brides maids every chance they get. They have a whole science to their crashing ( rules and all), and have become quite adept at the sport.

That all changes when they attend a wedding held by Secretary Cleary (Christopher Walken), whose daughter is getting hitched. During the lavish formal affair, Jeremy makes headway with Cleary’s physcopath daughter Gloria ( a hilarious Isla Fisher), while John slowly maneuvers his way into the life of the Secretary’s other daughter Claire (Rachel McAdams), who just happens to have a steady bo’ of her own.

Eventually, after all the formalities– the two are privately invited back to the Secretary’s estate, where they play touch football with the family, have formal dinners, sail out on the boat, & get hit on by the Secretary’s sex starved wife (Jane Seymour) & his homosexual son Todd (Keir O’Donnell).

Its all very funny and silly- but the great chemistry by Wilson and Vaughn helps the film move at a steady pace. The supporting roles of McAdams and Fishler are nicely fleshed out as well. While no means a great movie, “The Wedding Crashers” is quite funny at times, and overall enjoyable.

Some people have called this a raunchy, gross-out comedy; although I noticed nothing of the sort. Besides the dialogue and a few breast shots, theres really nothing raunchy or gross-out about “Wedding Crashers” at all. It certainly wouldnt fall into the category of “Something About Mary” or the “American Pie” movies.

Vaughn and Wilson definitley shine throughout and appear to be having the time of their lives here….

Recommended.

I was a big fan of Chandler as a boy in the 1950’s. My personal favorites of his from then and as an adult are Pillars of the Sky and Yankee Pasha. As always with older films, you have to put them in the context of the time in which they were made as far as style, realism, etc. Believe me, this guy was handsome to the ladies and a man’s man to the guys….tons of on screen magnetism.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Away All Boats! Click Here

The main thing I want to add about both Chandler and this movie is my experience watching this film as a Navy officer aboard a ship of the very same type during the Viet Nam era. The title of the film refers to the fact that the ship (the Belinda, as I recall) was an amphibious cargo ship, one which carries marine vehicles, anchors off the coast, lowers boats (”away all boats”) into the water and drops the vehicles into the boats for the trip to the beach with U.S Marines who drive them ashore and onward. In the officers’ wardroom aboard the USS El Paso in the early ’70’s, we watched this movie multiple times and loved it as well done and realistic.

We did get some big chuckles out of the casting comparing actors like Richard Boone (”Have Gun Will Travel”) playing, I think, the First Lieutenant, and Lex Barker (Tarzan) as the Executive Officer and comparing these guys to our own counterparts. We all thought the film was “Navy” all the way, however. I’m not sure if these amphibious cargo ships are still in operation, but they were used through the first Gulf War.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Away All Boats! Click Here

This movie is realistic and an accurate depiction of a U.S.Navy amphibious ship during wartime. Chandler is certainly the main man in the story but does not dominate to quite the same extent as in some of his other films. He is good in the role, however, and this is an authentic depiction of Navy life and a good story.

AWAY ALL BOATS is a heroic story of a veteran Navy Captain’s love for his ship and crew. Jeff Chandler does a fine job as Jeb Hawk Captain of the troop assault ship the APA-22, known as the Belinda. Hawk is a former destroyer commander that takes command of a newly built ship and an almost totally new crew and starts right off teaching the “Navy Way” of doing things right. The movie is full of colorful characters each interacting to the exciting final sea battle ending. This movie is a great way to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon.

The transfer of OUT OF AFRICA is gorgeous on this newly released DVD. The African sun is bright and the detail is crisp — very important since the scenery is practically a third character in this Oscar-winning “Best Picture” from 1985.

I really enjoyed “Song of Africa”, the documentary created for this DVD release. Not mentioned in the DVD’s technical specs, this documentary features several cut scenes not included in the film (except in a network television showing). Example: the subplot of the servant boy with the bad leg whom Karen Blixen heals. There are a few Redford-Streep scenes there, too, which ended up on the cutting room floor (a last dance among Karen Blixen’s packed-up home; a made-up story on safari.)

Also, the documentary features incredibly funny and entertaining tales told by Meryl Streep. She is a great mimic — listen to the sound effects that woman can make! At times hilarious and reflective, she shares stories about the making of the film (the story of a tethered lion she was supposed to whip is particularly funny). Conspicuously absent (just like in THE WAY WE WERE DVD) is Mr. Redford’s point of view.

Also interesting is screenwriter Kurt Luedtke’s tales of the script. It is fascinating to learn about the genesis of classic moments. Wait til you hear how he came up with the idea of Streep getting her hair washed by Redford. (Then listen to Streep’s hilarious story of the Hippos in the river!) Also revealing is composer John Barry’s interview. His scoring of Blixen’s desert march is interesting — music can really shape a scene!

OUT OF AFRICA is one of my favorite films. The widescreen version on this DVD is a great presentation! Definitely one for your collection! Thanks, Universal and Sydney Pollack for putting together a great package.

This review refers to the Universal Widescreen “Collector’s Edition” DVD of “Out Of Africa”…..

“Out Of Africa” not only takes my breath away, but for 2 hours and 40 minutes I am transported to another time and place. A beautiful story in a wonderous setting will have you mesmerized as well. No matter how many times I view this film, I never tire of the gorgeous cinematography, the lulling music, the compelling story and of course the superb acting all brought together by the wonderful direction of Sydney Pollack.

Based on a true story, it depicts the life of Karen Blixen(who wrote under the name of Isak Dinesen) She marries a philandering Baron, and gains a title but discovers he has squandered her money on a coffee plantation in Kenya. Left to run it on her own, she befriends the local residents “The Kikuyu”, offers them education and medical help, survives on her own strong willed nature and falls in love with the country, the people and local hunter Denis Finch Hatton.

The story is told in narrative by Karen, as she is now an old woman, thinking back to this time of love, passion, adventure and loss. Meryl Streep, Robert Redford and Klaus Maria Brandauer are masters of their craft as they bring these characters to life. The film was honored with several academy awards including Best Picture(1985),a well deserved Best Director for Pollack, Best Screenplay by Kurt Luedtke, Orginal Score for the genuis of John Barry, and one for the gorgeous Cinematography among others. I loved the music so much, which includes many works by Mozart, I just ordered the soundtrack!

The DVD transfer by Universal is outstanding. All the colors and sounds of Africa, seem to come alive right there in your living room. The growl of a lion, the texture of the landscape, the music all magnificent. The picture is presented in anamorphic widescreen(1.85:1), and the dolby digital 4.1 surround sound is perfect!. The extras include commentary with Sydney

Pollack production notes, cast bios, captioning, and a not to be missed documentary “Song of Africa” where you will find interviews with Pollack, Streep, and John Barry discussing the film and the music. This a great DVD buy at a great price.

Enjoy this very romantic film over and over again…..Laurie

Now I haven’t seen the whole series (because it is not fully released in the US yet), Candidate for Goddess (also known as Piolit Candidate) is a great series. It is of a SiFi Drama about the human race trying to stay alive in mysterious attacks from “Victim” (notice the name, which most likely has hidden meaning). In this battle humans use robots controlled buy humans with EX power (actually it’s more like an evolved form of human, which basically is a person with a self inhancing ability). The main characters face internal struggles while trying to become piolits of Robots to save their colony. The robots themselves are also mysterious, especially the Goddesses. It seems to hint of the fact that they may not have been man made.

Altogether it is a great series and I recomend it to anyone, however the 2nd eppisode in this volume contains a good amout of nudity that was edited out of Cartoon Network’s version. However it is not graphic (so it isn’t Hentai) also on the Cartoon Network version the cigarette has been changed to a tooth pick. (I thought this was important to mention to parents)

I am what one would call a hard core anime fan, but unlike others I do not see the extremely exaggerated “borrowed ideas” of what others see to be true. The only similarities between anouther series and this is slkightly with the way the robots are piolited and the way they are piolited in Neon Genesis: Evangelion (another series in which I highly recoment for adults to watch, very enlightening series). The main differece though is that in an eva you sit down and in a Goddess you float. However, I assume some people consider it borrowed because they both have the piolots link up directly with the mind to their crafts. I don’t believe it resembles gundam at all (which is a war series), if the reason it is believed it is similar because of the colonies then it is incedibly mistaken because many space series in all over the world have people live on space colonies and ships. This makes it laughable to think it was started by Gundam Wing (which is a good series also), a series which basically is the original gundam series in 79 conbined with other gundam series (hince the catagory it’s under: Alternate Universe Gundam Series) remixed with a cupple of original ideas and a more political view on things.

The animation style is mixed 2D and 3D (similar to the way Blue Submarine No 6 is (a miniseries that should be perchaced by all anime fans)

The music is very nice with orchestrated music and great vocal music. It really makes the series even more enjoyable.

The English voices are not too bad, they are not of the superior caliber of Cowboy Bebop (which had the best dubbed voices for an anime), but they are not horrible and are still pleasant to hear.

Also, like I said, the story is also excellent, though from what I’ve heard it is a short series (of the OVA size, which is about 13 eppisodes).

The extras are really great, however it is better on the second dvd where you get to see what it’s like to do the dubbing for the show the japanese stle.

The only main problem I see is the translation errors in the english subtitles (though it doesn’t hurt the fun in watching subtitled anime) and the fact that there are only three eppisodes per DVD. (which is why it didn’t get a perfect)

All in all a very great series that I’d recomend to anyone (over 13)

This series is the BEST!!! I have seen all the episodes shown on adult swim. I taped all of them and watched them over and over, but unfortunatly the tapes were corrupted and now I’m buying the whole series on DVD. The series isn’t a copy off of anything, but the only disappointing part is that the series is cut off when it could have and should have gone a lot further.

Peter Sellers was a comic genius, and nowhere is this more evident than in A Shot in the Dark, the first of the Pink Panther series to exclusively feature Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau. It’s one case where the sequel is superior to the original! This film can only be described as gaspingly funny. I’ve seen this move several dozen times, but it still makes me howl with laughter every time I see it. It’s amazing to think that Sellers also made The Pink Panther, Dr. Stangelove, and The World of Henry Orient the same year (all titles I would highly recommend as well). The fact that “Shot” is now on DVD in widescreen makes it that much more special. The supporting cast (Elke Sommer, Herbert Lom, George Sanders, and Bert Kwouk, among others) is perfect and provides a perfect ensemble foil to Sellers. The “Camp Sunshine” scene alone makes “Shot” worth seeing. This film is so funny, I can recommend that you purchase it without having seen it first — it’s that good!

This is one of the very rare films where the sequel is better than the original. This movie is absolutely a letter perfect comedy: suave yet silly; understated yet over the top; pompous yet reserved. You get the idea. A perfect film. I wouldn’t change one thing about this movie, even if I could. Peter Sellers defines the bumbling Clouseau as an individual better here than in the original, and I think the supporting cast is stronger as well. Elke Sommer is perfect as the beautiful, naive murder suspect who Clouseau goes to any ends to defend, while George Sanders is wonderful as the great scoundrel millionaire, Benjamin Ballon. Introduced for the first time in the series are Bert Kwouk as Kato (later spelled ‘Cato’), Graham Stark as Clouseau’s (extremely) patient assistant, Hercule, and my favorite of all the Panther supporting characters, the great Herbert Lom as Inspector Dreyfus. Watching Lom go through the phases of psychosis in this film is one of the greatest experiences and delights a person can have as a movie viewer. (I particularly like his performance in the closing scene, and when reading the newspaper with trembling hands and twitching eye.)

The plot concerns Clouseau’s infatuation with a wrongly accused murder suspect, and the chaos that develops from that unlikely situation. The film is filled with a degree of nuance seldom seen in a comedy, and is probably the best crafted of all the Panther films (although I have to admit that the way over the top “Pink Panther Strikes Again” is my personal favorite.) The physical comedy that Sellers could make totally natural (watch the “spinning globe” scene for an excellent example) is still unrivalled, and the nuanced interplay with other cast members is better than in any other comedy that I can think of (to see what I mean watch the “curved pool cue” scene and the interaction of both Monsieur Ballon and the butler.)

I highly recommend this film. The DVD print is good, though there are few extras (the original trailer is very amusing and a tad on the weird side.) It is slapstick, but it is very refined slapstick done by the master, Peter Sellers. If only they still made movies like this today. I give it five stars only because Amazon won’t allow more!

Writer-Director Michael Mann’s 1995 Los Angeles crime saga, Heat, is perhaps his best film work. Without having to worry about niggling facts and real timelines to get in the way (and cause critics to point them out) like in later films Ali or The Insider, this creative character-driven piece of moviemaking mesmerizes through great lead and ensemble performances, direction, and storytelling. All three aspects work wonderfully in this tale of two opposing “crews” who go up against eachother on the streets of L.A.: a professional group of criminals led by master thief Neil MacCauley (Robert DeNiro) and LAPD’s elite Metro Robbery/Homicide lead by Lt. Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino).

Both leads, as the story evolves, are cut from the same cloth: professional and dedicated to their chosen crafts–to a fault. Everything revolves around their jobs and nothing gets in their way, including the women in their personal lives: Justine Hanna (the very underrated Diane Venora) and the soon-to-be enlightened Eady (Amy Brenneman). It’s the long-suffering Justine that nails her husband’s true nature with her wifely realization: “You don’t live with me, you live among the remnants of dead people. You sift through the detritus, you read the terrain, you search for signs of passing, for the scent of your prey … and then you hunt them down. That’s the only thing you’re committed to. The rest is the mess you leave as you pass through.”

And it’s with that predator’s sense that Vincent spots MacCauley’s crew after the inital, spectacular armored truck robbery. He knows that a crew is in town who are good, skillful, and very dangerous (”At the drop of a hat, these guys will rock ‘n roll.”). Which is also the exact description of their leader. However, in this case, the master thief is also growing weary of his trade…and the emotional discipline it requires.”I am alone…I’m not lonely.” he tells Eady after they first meet. His is a life that requires him be able to “walk out on in 30 seconds flat if (he) feels the heat around the corner.” Neil is the moral antithesis for Vincent, but both will do whatever it takes to do what they do best. Eventually, both find out about the other half-way through the story.

The meeting on-screen for Neil and Vincent (a first for actors DeNiro and Pacino) is the movie’s key dramatic sequence. This wary confrontation over coffee is one of the best moments put to film. It’s not long, but it’s one of those powerfully quiet scenes that resonates throughout the rest of the film. The irony of the situation is that each recognizes themselves in the other…and appreciate the professionalism they find. Both, through their conversation, also are cognizant of the fact that each will put the other down permanently, if need be. Some other reviewers have stated that is the only time they’ll share the screen time in this movie. Not true. Heat’s tense climax on the outskirts of LAX is another one of those great film scenes. Mann skillfully brings their chase and relationship to a poignantly moving close.

This film also has one of the best ensemble casts ever on celluloid: Pacino, DeNiro, Val Kilmer, Venora, Ashley Judd, Brenneman, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Mykelti Williamson, Wes Studi, Ted Levine, Dennis Haysbert, William Fichtner, and a young Natalie Portman. All of them giving excellent performances to an equally well written Michael Mann script. Filmed all over my hometown, and in some of the best and bad spots of Los Angeles, Heat makes great use of the locales with some breathtaking cinematography. It also has one of my all-time favorite action sequences, the Bank Heist in downtown (tragically, a real-life bank shootout in L.A. of hauntingly similar proportions would happen a couple of years later). At almost three hours in length, it takes a committment, but the viewer will be well rewarded with drama highly praised for its depth in character development and exciting sequences. This was not only one of the best films of 1995, it was one of the best for that decade. Okay, I’ve convinced myself: it is Michael Mann’s best.

10 years after the release of Michael Mann’s epic crime tour de force, Heat is still an absolute masterpiece. Originally a screenplay which sat on the shelf for almost twenty years before being greenlit, Heat is the perfect character driven crime drama. Mann pits Al Pacino and Robert De Niro as a dueling cop and crook whose lives bear stunning resemblances to themselves. Vincent (Pacino) becomes obsessed in his case to help escape the reality of his failing marriage, while Neil (De Niro) is a cool, calm, collected and disciplined master thief who, with his skilled team (including Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore) are planning a heist which will change everyone involved forever. This portrait of these people and their failing personal lives sacrificed for their obsessive careers makes Heat the best film to come from Mann, and undoubtadly the best big budget crime drama to come out of the 90’s. The face off between Pacino and De Niro is a film buff’s dream, and the climactic LA shootout is possibly one of the best action sequences in cinematic history. The rest of the cast, which includes Jon Voight, Diane Venora, Natalie Portman, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, Mykelti Williamson, Wes Studi, Ted Levine, Kevin Gage, Denis Haysbert, William Fichtner, Danny Trejo, Henry Rollins, Tom Noonan, and Hank Azaria, does brilliant work. Truly a cinematic masterpiece. This new 2-disc Special Edition from Warner Bros. contains a great commentary from Mann and a few nice featurettes, but the deleted scenes are hardly worth watching and add nothing to the film.
