This movie gives a recent angle on Pre – WW2 German society. The title’s ‘Swing Kids’ are German youngsters who were fervent in British and American slag & fashions. Since Germany’s official policy towards America & Britain wasn’t very sympathetic at the time (to say the least), Swing hangouts were routinely searched for by HJ’s (”Hitler Junged” – Hilter’s Youths), Swing Kids were targeted by them, and Swing music was hard to fetch.

The movie’s three main characters are caught in the struggle between Swing music and the pressureto join the HJ’s. Arvid, who is partially paralized, and is therefore ‘unacceptable’ by the Nazis, is a rabid Swing fan (which a substantial piece of is a rebellion against the people who won’t salvage him) . Peter is struggling with his father’s ‘disappearance’ (he was taken by the Nazis a few years before the events of the movie) . Thomas is impartial looking for acceptance, which he doesn’t seem to net from his family or friends, so he willingly turns into a HJ – unprejudiced to satisfy his need. The friends split up, turn against each other, and each goes towards his tragic ruin.

The narrative in itself is predictable, but since the performances of the actors are quite trustworthy, and the period and subject matter of the films are not your distinct WW2 movies, it is a very appetizing one (even fair for knowldge’s sake) .

I scream 11th grade and when we advance WWII I have been looking for a movie which is righteous enough for the kids to explore that doesn’t fair indicate blood and guts. Many of the kids can’t fathom why an entire nation would objective follow a man hooked on the destruction of another speed. This movie gives them a recent viewpoint, a kid’s viewpoint, that they can recount to. They can understand that not everyone wanted to go along, not everyone agreed but few were pleasant of standing up and sticking to their beliefs. The brainwashing techniques, the pressure from peers, family and dismay made it easier for Hitler to derive and gain control of Germany. I open WWII with a brief explanation of the conditions existing in Europe when Hitler rose to power and then prove this movie. My students always savor the movie and approach away from viewing it with a better thought of how Hitler got into power. I highly recommend this film for teaching and/or honest enjoying.

Yes, FARGO won lots of awards, and clear, RAISING ARIZONA isuproariously droll, but obtain no mistake: MILLER’S CROSSING is thequintessential Coen brothers film. In point of fact, it’s flawless, a jewel you can turn over and around in your hands again and again, seeing a original facet every time, each one striking and level-headed and perfect.

The script is awash with Prohibition-era jargon both historically grounded and whimsically invented, a symphony of phrases and exchanges that linger and echo long after being heard. (It isn’t original after a viewing to lumber around asking friends, “What’s the rumpus? “, or to complain about being given “the high hat” upon being snubbed.)

The performances, as well, are individually and collectively irresistable. I defy you, in fact, to accumulate a single film in which _any_ of the major players has ever been better. There’s not a deceptive or miscast effect in the whole of the dramatis personae. There’s Gabriel Byrne as the inscrutable, Machiavellian Tom Reagan, a trusted advisor to the city’s Irish mob lord who falls out of favor and “defects” to the Italian camp to place his contain skin…or does he? Albert Finney plays Leo, the aforementioned Irish power broker whose fists of iron, vicious survival instinct, and all-too-vulnerable heart congeal into a simply considerable, unforgettable character. John Turturro is equal parts pathetic outcast and conniving opportunist as Bernie Birnbaum, the unscrupulous, vampirically pale bookmaker whose shady maneuvers state the whole status into motion. Marcia Pleased Harden exudes fierce intelligence and buckets of carefully-aimed sex appeal as Bernie’s sister Verna, whose unflagging drive to protect her brother — even from himself — almost excuse her crooked machinations. J.E. Freeman drips dismal and impending violence all over the camouflage as smarter-than-you-want-him-to-be enforcer Eddie Dane. Jon Polito, as hot-tempered Italian ringleader Johnny Caspar, may be the only character at hand to actually feel sorry for, as his oddly consistent ethical code makes it a certain bet he doesn’t stand a chance in his environment.

There’s more to say about the acting, of course, but I’ll terminate there rather than pour accolades onto the entire cast. And when I say “entire,” I’m not exaggerating: every person who comes into frame, from the leads to the smaller parts to the people with one line or none at all, fit together and play off of each other as though they’d been born to do nothing else in their entire lives. The whole of it actually makes it difficult not to recognize acting and casting problems in other films.

I’m running out of room here, so I can only nod to some of the other perfect elements of production. Barry Sonnenfeld’s dead-on photography is measured and seamless where appropriate, frenetic where famous. Space create and costuming invent for such an improbable illusion that were this not a color film, you might actually forget that it was released 9, not 69 years ago. And even the sound — from the music (diegetic and otherwise) to the crystal-clear sound effects that pierce the visual and diagram you in by the ears, like they’re supposed to — is a _presence_ in its bear upright throughout the film. I mean, when was the last time ice cubes dropping into an customary glass or the wringing out of an alcohol-soaked rag into a tinny dish felt truly woven into the designed carry out of a scene in a movie?

What continues to amaze me about MILLER’S CROSSING is that no matter how many times I discover it, regardless of how hard I leer, I _can’t glean anything disagreeable with it_. That’s an extremely rare place in my experience. It’s what we all want out of a movie, and almost never secure. MILLER’S CROSSING delivers exactly that feeling, and when Tom Reagan leans against that tree and adjusts that hat in the haunting final shot, he knows it impartial as surely as we do. He doesn’t seem to feel especially gratified about it, but that’s okay. _You_ will.

Most people will let the titles “GOODFELLAS”, “THE GODFATHER (I & II) “, “ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA” and “THE UNTOUCHABLES” roll off their tongues when asked what their accepted movie is in the “mob” genre. Although seldom mentioned, “MILLER’S CROSSING” must consume its rightful state alongside the above as one of the definitive treatments of gangster dynamics in American Cinema. I like to call it “The Thinking Man’s Mob Movie” because it’s a film that requires one to really focus on the action and dialog and not merely sit support in a lounger without attention span and wait for extinguish. These characters are multi-faceted, the site is complex and the payoff for the viewer is delivered through outstanding cinematography (perhaps the Coen’s best!) and skillful pacing. Coupling their usual stable of actors (Turturro, Buscemi, Polito) with musty thespo Albert Finney, the exquisitely laconic Gabriel Byrne, and femme-semi-fatale Marcia Delighted Harden, the Coen Brothers have assembled a truly tall ensemble cast that transcends the brutality and authenticity of the era. Certain, there’s grand ruin! In the splendid gangster pictures, violence is actually a character unto itself, always lurking in the background until called upon to create a point. In “MILLER’S CROSSING”, the Coen Brothers seem to downplay the right mechanical violence by isolating the factors and sequences that are responsible for it. Betrayal and revenge are necessary themes in this film. The crisp writing makes the conversation between characters appear effortless and uncontrived. There’s a obvious casuality in the dialog that belies the Coen’s alarmingly lawful renderings of gangland execution. Finally, the enjoyment one derives from viewing “MILLER’S CROSSING” is not related to how considerable he/she understands the action or knows about the mob lifestyle, but to the appreciation of the filmmaker’s art in communicating the brutality and fraternity of these individuals with fantastic beauty and precision.

Watching this recently, it amazed me how runt action there is in this movie, and yet it remains as tantalizing and curious as ever. There are none of the site pieces we have advance to inquire in original genre films: no explosions, no gory deaths, one tiny skedaddle scene. Tension is developed through character development and the fantastic performances of Patricia Neal and Michael Rennie, with some fantastic supporting work from Sam Jaffe and Frances Bavier (Mayberry’s Aunt Bea!)

There are very few special effects: the unusual tank disappears in a glow of light, but other than that, this is a film driven by character development. Taut direction by Robert Wise, straightforward writing from Edmund North and impressive cinematography by Leo Tower get an brilliant, literate, adult science fiction film that appeals to all ages.

Special mention must be made of Bernard Herrmann’s haunting derive. One of the first film scores to exhaust Leon Theremin’s eerie and eponymous electronic instrument, which unfortunately became a genre cliché, the music adds immeasurably to the tense and unsettling atmosphere.

Modern audiences may gain the film’s message heavy handed and sure, relying on 1950’s atomic paranoia and the absolute power it brought. In fact, Klaatu’s proffered level-headed solution borders on totalianarianism. But these are minor considerations considering this is a simple chronicle stunningly told.

The DVD contains many spicy extras of interest to film buffs and collectors, including a shooting script, extended discussions on the evolution of the film from belief to release, and an outlandish witness at the people fascinated with collecting 1950’s sci-fi film props and paraphernalia.

First and foremost, this is a review for the 1951, murky and white, 1.33:1 aspect ratio, 2-disc, special edition DVD and NOT for the remake (Gort! Keanu barada nikto :)

Okay so here’s the lowdown; as I now have both this novel edition and the unusual single, flipper disc, version, and having watched all of the bonus features on the recent 2-disc status, I can affirm you this: maintain the extinct disc!

Why, because the 73 plus tiny, making of, on the unique disc is gone, replaced with a unusual 23 miniature fluff fragment that only skims the surface of the chronicle, of the making of this film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Day the Earth Stood Still! Click Here

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Day the Earth Stood Still! Click Here

Gone are the lengthy on camera interviews with the producer, director and female lead, replaced instead with film historian’s inane babble, with the curious snippet of philosophize recordings of the director and producer, taken from the 73 plus minutes, making of, from the current disc (without the on camera report) .

Also gone, is the very exciting, “Collectors”, segment, tacked onto the destroy of the unique making of, which had several prominent collectors showing off such treasures as the fresh flying saucer model and Gort statue, weak in the true film, with anecdotes about the film, and where the props they now owned, had ended up after the filming.

As for the extra stuff added to the 2-disc spot, nothing is worth the non-inclusion of the unique making of from the first disc (most of the unusual stuff has nothing to do with the film, but instead conveys the political tensions of the world at that time, which, although slightly of interest, is not worth upgrading for) .

And on a current extra sign for the novel 2-disc situation, the reading of, Farewell To The Master, is poorly executed, with a static represent with simple playing instructions, demonstrate throughout the entire reading (where as they could of has stills from the film playing throughout the reading, while the soundtrack played quietly in the background) and trying to maneuver through the reading is a nightmare, as there are three chapter stops, which are about 10 plus minutes each, with no plot of speedily searching through the 10 plus exiguous segments, so if you terminate playing the reading at 9 minutes, you can’t open the playback where you left off but instead have to listen to the whole thing from the commence of the chapter (I know this because I stopped the playback for a small, and when I hit the play button on the remote, the film started to play, so I had to go support to the menu and launch the reading again, and listen to the stuff I had already heard. I would have preferred that an onscreen text version of the short (45 pages – not so short in my books) yarn be included instead) .

So unless you are a completes, then this 2-disc version isn’t worth the money, and even if you are looking to purchase this for the first time, I’d HIGHLY recommend that you hold up the novel DVD release, as the describe quality is the same, and you regain the far suitable 73 plus slight, making of, along with the director’s commentary, recount galleries and recent trailer.

Three years after she rocketed to superstardom in The Wizard of Oz, Dinky Judy Garland was all grown up and more than ready to prefer her first truly adult leading role; for his portion, Gene Kelly, having unbiased wowed audiences on Broadway in Pal Joey, was ready to design his feature film debut. Garland and Kelly made a natural match, demonstrating big chemistry together from the very open. For Me and My Gal is unbiased a amazing film, featuring dancing, singing, romance, heartache, joy, distress, and honest about every emotion under the sun, oftentimes swinging in mood at the descend of a hat from euphoria to misery. A nervous Gene Kelly credited Judy for pulling him through the production of this his first film, and in all truth Judy turns in an outstanding performance here. The movie, released in 1942, is in many ways tied to the contemporary war danger at home, and while it may be a distinct product of its era, its themes and unforgettable performances acquire it a film that will live and be watched and certainly enjoyed forever.

For Me and My Gal is also a tribute to the gigantic vaudeville tradition, a tradition Judy Garland knew quite well first-hand from her childhood spent on the stage. Garland plays Jo Hayden, a vaudevillian singer/dancer working to pay for her brother’s education. Teamed up with Jimmy Metcalf and his gang, she is successful enough but far removed from the dream of every vaudeville performer of playing The Palace. As the movie opens, she meets up with Harry Palmer (Gene Kelly), an entertainer so vain that Jo dislikes him immediately, even saying at one point, “I bet he takes a bow every time he hears a clap of declare.” Palmer wants nothing more than to rep ahead, to glean to The Palace, and he sees potential in the young Jo Hayden. When his initial business proposals to her go nowhere like a flash, he turns on the charm and, before you know it, they are singing and dancing beautifully together to the tune of For Me and My Gal. Jimmy Metcalf loves Jo, but he breaks up his gain act in order to create Jo grasp Harry’s offer. The unique duo of Palmer and Hayden catch success, but not the kind they are yearning for, as we sight them accomplish a number of tall song and dance routines on stage, the most familiar of which is probably When You Wore a Tulip (And I Wore A Huge Red Rose) . Whenever things originate going well, though, something unpleasant happens. Jo is all torn up when Palmer starts spending all his free time with the famed singer Eve Minard, as Palmer has yet to figure out that he loves Jo as powerful as Jo loves him. When this hurdle is passed, the road ahead for the duo only gets rougher as war intervenes. Having finally secured a region at The Palace, Palmer takes drastic action to avoid being drafted, but his rash act backfires on him in the worst blueprint possible. The ending of the film concentrates as distinguished on helping the war distress and patriotism as it does restoring, in quite a tender manner, the worship and commitment of two people who belong together.

Harry Palmer surely was meant to relate a lot of American men in wartime. Caught up in his hold hopes and dreams, he ignores what is going on in Europe, then tries to come by a plan out of answering his draft summons when it inevitably comes. He learns that there are considerable more critical things in life than performing at The Palace and that a man has a duty to assist his country when called upon, in whatever capacity he is superior of serving. Judy Garland’s patriotic song and dance sequences and the real-life armed service radio broadcasts she appeared on throughout the early 1940s made her a pin-up girl of World War II. Definitely, this film carried a message to movie audiences to do what they could to befriend the troops going to war yet again, but its greatest power is wrung from the soul of Judy Garland in the earn of many touching, dramatically noteworthy scenes of loss and heartache. For Me and My Gal, despite a sizable measure of comedy and appetizing song and dance, follows a dismal road at times, making it a movie that truly spans the entire spectrum of human emotion. It’s impossible not to cherish this movie, and the fact that it delivers Gene Kelly’s film debut and Judy’s first truly adult dramatic role makes it all the more famous and special.

FOR ME AND MY GAL could easily be categorized as promotion for supporting World War II. It was released in 1942 when the United States entered the war and attend was strong, but collected needed some attend from outside sources. FOR ME AND MY GAL more than does its share for the war concern. It tells the legend of two hopeful Vaudeville stars who want to approach the mountainous time. Harry (played by Gene Kelly) will do anything to acquire to the top. The only thing that seems to terminate him is his like for his dancing partner Jo (played by Judy Garland) . Jo looses her brother in battle. Within minutes of hearing the news she learns that Harry injured himself on purpose to avoid World War I. She gets so indignant at Harry’s selfishness she vows never to peer him again. Harry realizes both the error of his ways and his treasure for Jo and vows to be a hero. In suitable Hollywood fashion, Harry becomes a hero and he and Jo are reunited. At the demolish of the movie, people are encouraged to acquire war bonds.

Buy,Download, Or Stream For Me and My Gal! Click Here

The film is predictable, but so are most Hollywood musicals. Kelly and Garland are obedient partners, and both are believable in their roles and add a depth to the film that lesser stars would be unable to do. We worship the sweetness of Jo and Kelly is a believable semi-scoundrel, a role that he seems to master in this film and others. The dancing sequences are sterling and Busby Berkeley’s direction captures arresting angles that highlight Kelley’s talent. As predictable as the epic may be, both Kelly and Garland give improbable performances and create the movie advance to life.

Movie buffs will cherish the fact that this film is now on DVD. Garland fans will savor John Fricke’s commentary on the film as well as the shots that were not included in the final crop of the film. The Fricke commentary speaks not only of Garland, but Kelly, Berkeley, Fried, and others enthusiastic in MGM musicals of the time. This feature alone is worth the sign.

When Elizabeth’s (played by Judi Dench) husband dies, she contemplates where she should go with her life. She starts by returning to the music she played during World War 2, when she belonged to an all-girl band called The Blonde Bombshells. However, when she runs into Patrick (Ian Holm), the drummer from The Blond Bombshells (OK, they couldn’t win a girl drummer), she hits on the concept of bringing the Blonde Bombshells relieve together. However, that’s easier said than done–some are lifeless, some have left the country, one has lost her sanity, one has found God, and all are scattered. However, Elizabeth is not a woman to give up easily. This is the epic of nostalgia, overcoming, the fancy of music…and so remarkable more! [Color, released in 2000, with a running time of 1 hour, 24 minutes.]

I absolutely loved this movie! It is star-encrusted, and even though I am an American, I kept recognizing unbiased about everyone in it. The sage is touching, and yet not maudlin. I loved the music (so very timely again), the acting, and the fable. The one warning I will give is that the movie earned its PG-13 rating due to swearing, with the “F” word being customary all too often. That said, though, this is a vast movie, one that I highly recommend.

I agree completely with the other clear reviews of “The Last of the Blonde Bombshells”, so I’ll not recount the space details, and other comments. The film is a delight!

I must whine my frustration that witty, poignant films like this, clearly aimed at an older audience, do not seem to appear in the local cineplex.

There may be one or two actresses in the world as top-notch as Dame Judi–but none are better. She really shines here, even in a cast of top-notch customary British actors, not to mention non-Brits Dukakis and Caron. So nice to inspect Ms. Caron on cover again, even in a cameo, some 50 years after “An American in Paris”.

So–a genuine winner–and the heed is fair.

Recommended.

I was recently given the opportunity to offically review Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s DVD region Succor IN THE DAY Complete Season One on my blog, The Church of The Sizable Oval. Assist IN THE DAY is a fancy trove of information on the history of NASCAR. Whether you are an weak school fan of the sport or a newbie to NASCAR, it is an investment you won’t regret. Dale Jr. has done an sterling job in allowing the watcher to learn more about the most favorite sport in the U.S. through this incredible race through the past. You gaze and learn many of the same things that Dale Jr. learned in the same device he did, by watching the archaic TV exhibit “Car and Track”. Many of the most famed races and tracks of the 60’s and 70’s are highlighted, and the differences in the rules and regulations then and today are blatantly definite. The Driver’s then, drove to earn. They didn’t drive to please anyone but their bear competitive drive and that meant doing what they had to do to net. Safety today and safety then is like dusky and white. The “former school” driver’s were, in my conception 1/4 valorous and 3/4 crazy! Those driver’s, made the sport what it is today. Acquire it!! You will stare it over and over!!

The tv exhibit is astronomical. I admire the frail school nascar tapes. The pop-ups can be distracting but are shapely also. If you devour racing the dvd is for you. The passe races note where NASCAR came from and give reference to some of the bigger names in the sport. If you are novel to NASCAR and want a brief history this residence is also for you.

As I am in the music field in Mexico, trying with others to effect the same project work here, I was able to spy this fantastic documentary several months ago. It was a private showing, and almost the entire audience, friends, maestros, musicians, were weeping through it – deeply moved and filled with hope.

They’d already seen or owned “Tocar y Luchar”, the first dazzling film on El Sistema, but now Maria Stodmeier and Paul Smaczny have gone deeper, and have captured what is beyond words. Their general response of unmitigated admiration for El Sistema’s founder, José Antonio Abreu whom Claudio Abbado calls “a saint”.

And now, when you behold what musicians, such as the suitable ambassador Gustavo Dudamel, the Simón Bolívar Orchestra, to mention fair a few, have emerged from the project, you’ll marvel at why it took more than thirty years for us in North America to obtain on.

El Sistema has expanded since the first film exposure, and to me, portion of the miracle is

how children play as if they were adults – no passage of time seems point to. Their dedication – theirs and that of the teachers and staff who work with Abreu – is almost surreal. Where did all these frail souls in children’s bodies near from? Is this what happens when they’re given a chance to experience classical music? When you listen to their wisdom, so beautifully reflected in the many levels of the project, you’ll probably be speechless. And hopeful.

Buy,Download, Or Stream El Sistema: Music to Change Life! Click Here

There’s a enormous deal more to say about this grand documentary which I hope anyone with the least interest in changing the world, orders peep unseen. Paul Smaczny of EuroArts, who has produced the world’s finest concert films on DVD, together with the brilliantly sensitive Maria Stodmeier, have done us all a immense favour.

I thank them a thousand times over…and when you behold some of the small touches – such as a hawk slowly hovering over dense and sprawling Caracas, free and soaring on the wind -

you’ll understand the spiritual message of the film far beyond words.

I saw this film last night on Ovation television and I am buying the film now for my son and my two granddaughters to search for. It is awe-inspiring and a teaching instrument for adults that believe they know about education.

I am amazad at the map classical orchestral training for untutored, uneducated, unpleasant, hopeless children can win these same children into the realms of spiritual betterment, professional quality instrument playing and the blueprint to a better life. Some of the children are already traveling going to other countries to play in orchestras.

Superb.

Double Indemnity is obviously a classic film but this DVD transfer is appalling. Almost every scene is incredibly grainy, the source print is obviously not in very expedient conditon (perhaps needing to be refurbished), and to top it off, there are no deluxe features and the extra packaging is rather inadequate(with no information booklet or history of the movie) .

This would be frustrating for any film but is downright uncouth treatment of a cinema classic. We can only hope someone will utilize the time and money principal to restore the print for a modern theater bustle, as has been done with other older films. Perhaps then, DVD buyers will collect the version of this classic they deserve.

What a sizable film! It’s honest unbelievable. Especially Edward G. Robinson. Sadly, it’s a bit dated (mighty of the dialogue looks rather campy by today’s standards), but the region hasn’t stale a day. It’s detached a tense and captivating film noir masterpiece.

It’s a pity the DVD is so very terrible. It’s really terrible. I can’t stress this enough. It’s very grainy, there are no bonus features at all, and there’s no liner notes at all. Extremely shoddy treatment of such a astounding film. I’d like to peek a special edition of this film produced as soon as possible, and done fair!

What a astounding movie. Who could ask for more, with a cast including Cary Grant and Robert Mitchum? Not to mention a duel, a missing mink coat, mushrooms, British manors and fishing?

A improbable romance, that shows how fate and middle age can approach together and produce havoc on the seemingly pleased, if not a bit expressionless, life of a settled English couple, whose gargantuan country estate doubles as a tourist atrraction to encourage itself. (with lots of American tourists who leave apple cores and sticky bits of paper all over the grounds!)

To earn ends meet, the wife also happens to urge a thriving mushroom growing business in the cellar! (phew that was a long sentence!)

Robert Mitchum is one of these camera toting tourist who “mistakenly” wanders into the private fraction of the house, finding Lady Rile and the sparks skim!

It’s a charming frail adult romantic farce, that’s not too far fetched.

I recently caught this movie on cable and had to add it to my collection. Everyone in this film is bright, Deborah Kerr, Cary Grant, Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons. While touring a mansion Mitchum’s character meets up with Kerr’s and sparks glide. Scrutinize how the always suave and debonair Cary Grant catches on to their attraction and how hard he tried to achieve their marriage. Jean Simmons is hilarious as Kerr’s ditzy best friend. A bit soap-opera-ish at times but worth the pain of watching the myth unfold. It also beats anything that is out there among the unusual chop of movies. They obvious don’t compose ‘em like this anymore, nor is there anyone this talented in showbiz anymore!
